I figured out exactly how we will run the 3D project.

First, I want you to try the 2-photo-method on a landscape of our school. This means you take a tripod out, take 1 shot of your landscape, move the camera a little bit, like a couple inches (swivel it to the left) and take a 2nd shot. READ the tutorial (Open my Word doc)
http://www.photoshoplady.com/tutorial/how-to-apply-3d-effect-to-your-image/11481

The second part will be using Photoshop techniques on a single photo of an object or person to create 3D depth. Before you start this second part, I want you to practice the steps on one of my Lewis Hine photos. This effect works best in black and white:

You can skip the steps for clone stamping the edges in the second tutorial- it was confusing and I did not feel like it was really beneficial.

Anaglyphs

Make sure you turned in one portrait and one nature photo for the Unity and Variety project. Make sure yours has outlines! See my instructions below for outline examples and tips.

For this week:
Grab a pair of 3D glasses and look at the 2 examples I left on the M:/

Open up the word document in my Photo II folder. Read this document thoroughly and follow the first tutorial link. You will be using the FIRST technique in the first tutorial link. (The second one listed on that page is really complicated, though you're welcome to try it out!)

The FIRST link makes the entire photo 3D. The second link makes one specific part of a photo look 3D. We will do ONE OF EACH. The theme will be

Read all of the instructions before you start anything! It tells you valuable tips, like how far to move the camera if you are taking a close-up versus a far away landscape.

Variety and Unity

You will be creating a self portrait image like the one on the M:/. You will do one nature and one person. The project is simple and fun:

1. Take your photo
2. Open it in Photoshop. You can do the slices many different ways. Perhaps the fastest way is  this:
3. Use rectangular marquee to select a slice.
4. Experiment with hue/saturation, levels, black and white, etc. from the Image-->Adjustments menu. Then you can choose Filter--> Filter gallery to select some even more creative effects.
5. Repeat until you have many different slices of special effects.
6. Use pen tool to outline key details in the image (See printed example)

USING PEN TOOL TO OUTLINE:
Set your BRUSH tool to the size you would like your outline to be, and make sure you have selected 0% hardness. Then go to pen tool and use the pen tool to outline your object. Right click and select "Stroke Path". Select "brush" from the drop down menu and click ok.

Its basically telling Photoshop to use your brush settings to draw the outline.

Name your banner LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_Banner.jpg
I have added a turn-in folder on the M:/ Turn in your name banner today by the end of the period. (As usual, you have a week from today to get it in the folder, BUT I will be adding the scores to Aeries during break, so it may show up as a missing assignment).

I also added a Quarter 2 extra credit folder, so you can begin collecting your things for extra points there. Just make sure your name is on everything.

On the M:/ you'll find a PDF tutorial and several source images. Download the source images and complete the tutorial. There are 3 photos you must complete using layer masks.

I prefer you use layer masking from now on instead of using destructive editing tools like the eraser. Layer masking never deletes any of the pixels- just hides them.

Run a 1x3 contact sheet for your edited photos and turn in to the Photo II folder.

Photo II: There is a turn in folder for your READ Posters. You should have 3 faculty members and 1 personal poster. You can name your posters LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_READ1.jpg, READ2.jpg etc.

Tuesday

Good morning guys!
If you picked your teachers and began sending your emails yesterday, that is wonderful. If not, you can skip yesterday and wait until I get back Wednesday to pick your teachers. Please read yesterday's post if you didn't already so you know what's going on.

Whether you started emailing teachers yesterday or not, you will still need something to do while you wait for replies and schedule your appointment to photograph people. So what do you do??

.... Wait for it..... Make your own READ poster! It will be fun. You get to decide what activities or features define you as a person. What props could you find and bring that would create a READ poster that says something about how YOU are?

First, go through this entire site, examining what the original posters were used for and what the campaign was all about. Look at all the visual examples. These will be your best models. Do you recognize any of the old celebrities? http://bookriot.com/2013/12/03/celebrity-read-posters-80s-90s/

Get a piece of paper.
  • I want you to brainstorm a list of roles you play in life. Are you a student? A big sister? A soccer player? An actor? A romantic? An artist? An animal lover? List as many as you can think of.
  • The second list I want you to make is what props or settings would serve as visual cues to that role. For example, a soccer player would probably be photographed on the soccer field with a soccer ball, maybe even in uniform. An animal lover could be photographed in nature holding an animal (maybe just a stuffed animal).
  • Third, I want you to make a list of your favorite book or textbook. So, for example, my favorite book as a kid was the Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe, but I also like Psychology, so I might also list a Psychology textbook.

Welcome, Photo II!!!

Ok, ok, Photo II gets left out and it isn't fair. Now you guys can get your instructions and tips in one place, too. (Everyone cheer! YAY!)

1. So, first, make sure your Overcoming Boundaries photos are finished. You should have 1 which focuses on a person and one which focuses on an object. Name your projects lastname_firstname_person.jpg and lastname_firstname_object.jpg

2. Drop your renamed, finished tutorial files in the Photo II turn in folder.

3. We have been asked to do another project for the school, kind of like Bulldog Bucks. KB in the bookroom wants to make READ posters for the library. You need to know what these look like, so do a google search for "READ posters", or "80s read posters".

4. KB wants to reach out to all the teachers in the school, so each teacher makes their own READ poster. Then we will select the best to be printed poster size and display in the library. Your Photo II period will be in charge of the teachers who have their prep at the same time as your class. So, period 2 deals with the teachers who have period 2 prep. That way we won't ever interrupt their class for a photo.

5. Check the list on the wall. Divide up the number of teachers by the number of photo II students in your period. Choose who will deal with what teachers for that period. Try to keep it even. Write this down! Make a list.

6. Look up the teacher emails on the Turlock High School website. Add these emails to your list.

7. Compose an email explaining our purpose, and include the following link, which provides examples. http://bookriot.com/2013/12/03/celebrity-read-posters-80s-90s/
Word this email professionally. Double check for spelling and grammar errors. It should be politely asking for their participation and explaining what we will be doing with the photos/posters. Include the who, what, when, where, why.

8. Do not send the email yet. I want to double check them.
